On July 27, 2004 the Housatonic Railroad had a minor derailment just east of the Stockbridge railroad station. The 30 car train had left Canaan, Connecticut and was headed to Pittsfield, Massachusetts. At around 1:20 am, local residents heard a loud bang as train's last 3 cars left the tracks. A 4th car was also partially derailed, but there were no hazardous materials on the train and the 2 operators onboard were unhurt. The tracks in the area had been replaced in the past few years to allow excursions by the Berkshire Scenic Railway.

Freight traffic on the Housatonic Railroad was delayed while the area was cleaned up. No street traffic was affected by this incident, but a trail to the Ice Glen rock formation was blocked. Hikers only needed to hike around the stopped train to continue on the trail.
