| Built in 1872
and located in North Canaan, Connecticut,
the Canaan Union Station is one of the most photographed stations along
the Berkshire Line. This station is at the junction of the original
Housatonic Railroad line and the former Central New England Railroad line.
The staion is inside the 'diamond' tracks that allowed HRR & CNE to
interchange freight cars. At one point this station was a very busy
station with passengers transferring between lines. It was noted for it's
dining area and especially it's pies. Another feature was the weather vane
in the shape of a locomotive on the top of the 3 story tower at the center
of the station. On October 12, 2001 an arson fire
destroyed much of the station. It destroyed a popular local restaurant as
well as other businesses. The Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department has
pictures of this fire on their
website (Look
under Pictures then North Canaan Depot Fire). Since more than half of the
structure was destroyed, historical preservation funds were unavailable.
The surviving structure was bought by the Connecticut Railroad Historical
Association in 2003. |

shots were taken of the Canaan Union Station were taken in April 2002.
These show the damage from the fire that was set here in October 2001 and
some of the work that has been recently been completed.
